Sherry embarked on her career in fire engineering after graduating and joining Origin Fire. Prior to this, Sherry earned a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, with a research focus on Built Environment and Sustainable Engineering Design, and gained four years of experience in Mechanical Engineering at Arup. She then pursued further studies at Canterbury University, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Fire Engineering before beginning her career with Origin Fire.
As a Senior Fire Engineer, Sherry’s role involves delivering engineering design and construction observation solutions that meet customer, company, and regulatory requirements. She tackles complex problems, assumes leadership roles, and guides projects and teams towards successful outcomes while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.
Sherry enjoys using innovative methods and advanced technology to tackle challenges, leading to high-quality fire safety designs. One particularly memorable project is the ongoing West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre, where she utilises Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) models and Pathfinder evacuation simulations to assess fire safety protocols.
Her approach to problem-solving is systematic and analytical, considering cost-effectiveness, feasibility, and stakeholder perspectives to arrive at the best decisions. Key challenges include staying updated with rapidly evolving knowledge and technologies, which she overcomes through proactive learning and engaging with professionals.
Sherry stays updated with industry trends by participating in webinars, trainings, conferences, and reading relevant articles. A proud achievement was receiving the Outstanding Engineering Achievement award at the FireNZ Conference in 2023, where she represented Origin Fire and highlighted the company’s professional strengths. In 2024, she had the honor of attending the SFPE International Performance-Based Design Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. There, she, alongside the New Zealand team, served as one of the key speakers, presenting an innovative case study on high-density housing.
Furthermore, Sherry is passionate about sustainable building design. She holds a LEED AP BD+C (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Building Design and Construction) certification and is committed to exploring the integration of fire safety design with sustainable design practices.
Sherry’s professional goals include advancing her technical expertise and contributing to addressing fire safety challenges in the industry. Outside of work, she enjoys reading biographies and books on history and technology, jogging, tennis, and traveling.
“What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to use innovative methods and advanced technology to tackle challenges, leading to sustainable and high-quality fire safety designs.”
