Steven was born in Durban, South Africa before making the trek as a child to Auckland with his family, where he has been based ever since. Completing a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Auckland, he then went on to study Fire Engineering at the University of Canterbury, graduating with a Masters degree.

Working with leading fire engineering organisations for the last five years, Steven commenced is role as Origin’s Fire Engineer in October 2022. While no two days are the same for a Fire Engineer, Steven’s role consists of high-level design advice and master planning, modelling the spread of fire and smoke, and  the finer details that contribute to the creative and collaborative solutions Origin is known for.

Piqued by an interest in the industry early on, Steven says that fire engineering allows him to work on a wide variety of interesting projects that sometimes require out-of-the-box thinking, while also contributing to the safety of people, buildings and contents. He has really enjoyed his time at Origin so far, and appreciates the collaborative nature of the team around him.

“Everyone is good to work with and happy to share their knowledge with the rest of the team,” he says.

When he isn’t striving to make a positive difference in the world through the likes of his role at Origin, Steven strives to make the most out of his free time through the likes of hiking, photography and a passion for his motorcycles!

“I’m looking forward to working on projects involving FDS modelling and learning more about how fire protection and fire safety interact.”
