Michael James holds a Master’s degree in Fire Engineering from the University of Canterbury and has over 30 years of experience as a consulting fire engineer. Driven by the challenge of ‘solving the unsolvable,’ Michael specialises in building designs using first principles rather than prescriptive methods. He believes that creative collaboration leads to the best solutions, a philosophy reflected in the experienced and talented team he has built at Origin Fire.
Understanding that fire engineering impacts all building design disciplines – architecture, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering – Michael fosters a collaborative ethos within the Origin Fire team to achieve the best design outcomes. Engaging with experts across these disciplines and applying first principles allows Origin Fire to meet fire safety objectives while supporting the overall vision of each project.
Michael is a recognised leader in the industry. As a past President of the New Zealand chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), he stays ahead of industry trends and is a sought-after speaker both in New Zealand and internationally.
In recent years, Michael has led teams through complex building remediation projects where compliance requires a blend of skill and ingenuity due to the non-compliance of original designs and constructions. He also serves as an expert witness for defective fire rating and fire protection systems in buildings.
“Solving the unsolvable and ensuring fire safety through innovative and collaborative design is what drives me every day.”
